UK Pavilion

This fiber glass sculpture created by Heatherwick Studio’s named the UK Pavilion, is one of the most beautiful sculptures I’ve ever seen. It was created for Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China.

Here is more information on the design and concept behind the UK Pavilion.

The studio’s design has three main aims: the first is to be a pavilion whose architecture is a direct manifestation of the content it exhibits; the second is to provide significant public open space in which visitors can relax; the third is to find a simple idea that is strong enough to stand out amidst the busy-ness of the hundreds of competing pavilions.

These aims are captured in two interlinked and experiential elements based around the subject of nature and cities – the Seed Cathedral, and a multi-layered landscape treatment of the 6,000sqm site. The Seed Cathedral is a platform to show the work of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew and their Millennium Seedbank. In the circulation zone under the landscape that surrounds the Seed Cathedral a series of installations explore in more detail the particularity of nature and UK cities.

The Seed Cathedral is a 20-metre high building, constructed from 60,000 transparent 7.5-metre long optical strands, each of which has embedded within its tip a seed. The interior is silent and illuminated only by the daylight that has filtered past each seed through each optical hair.

The UK Pavilion has consistently been ranked by visitors as one of the most popular pavilions with 50,000 people visiting each day.

I don’t know how I stumbled upon this but I found this video of Australian model Amazon Eve. She is known as the world’s tallest model coming at 6′8″ tall. Some say she’s a man, I just can’t tell.

Obsessive Consumption is an illustrated book on the daily consumption Kate Bingaman-Burt.

In her own words she explains her book:

“I’ve been drawing something that I purchase every day since February 5, 2006. Obsessive Consumption represents a selection of these daily drawings. I draw objects that are rather ordinary: Coke cans, Post-it notes, toilet bowl cleaner-sundry items that a lot of consumers have a shared experience with; items that we interact with, but don’t really think about. I love documenting the mundane and, in turn, putting a personal face on something that is mass-produced. I make work about personal consumerism, market economies, guilt, joy, excess, more guilt, gifts, celebration, repetition, and the community of these shared experiences.” —Kate Bingaman-Burt
