The Paintings of Teiji Hayama

Inspired by the east and the west, Teiji Hayama paints delicate figures that embody historical context. Her pale, ethereal figures have frail bodies and portray the idea of a female deity.
Hayama uses Christian symbolism in her pieces, and her figures are all conveyed in an angelic light. Intermixing aspects from Greek mythology and Japanese pop culture, Hayama’s sense of style illustrates how history and contemporary issues can be beautifully conjoined.
Hayama touches on themes of identity and belonging, religious and spiritual devotion, and the loss of innocence from childhood to adolescence. Her paintings are charged with psychological emotions and a sense of vulnerality.
